Police Officer Denies Rape Charges in Shetland Trial
A police officer on trial for multiple sex offenses in Shetland has told the High Court in Edinburgh that he did not commit the crimes he is accused of.
Carmichael John Williamson, 32, currently suspended from duty, gave evidence on the second day of his trial, denying allegations of assault and rape against a teenager between 2014 and 2015, as well as sexual activity with the girl when she was under age. He also denied raping a woman in 2022 while she was intoxicated and unable to consent.
Williamson stated that it was untrue he had penetrative sex with the teenager when she was under 16, asserting that their sexual intercourse began after her 16th birthday. He also denied any sexual contact with an adult woman outside a community hall during a function in 2022, and further denied any subsequent sexual contact with her at a house. He claimed he had no recollection of recording any sexual encounters.
Under cross-examination by the Crown, Williamson disputed the women's accounts. He told the court that he has served as a police constable for over 10 years, previously as a special constable. The trial, presided over by judge John Morris KC, continues with Williamson denying all charges related to alleged offenses in Shetland between 2014 and 2022.
