In a departure from standard pursuit tactics, a Metropolitan Police officer in London borrowed a member of the public's bicycle to chase down a suspect. The incident occurred in Twickenham, in southwest London.

The pursuit began with the officer in a patrol car, following a suspect on a bicycle. When the chase moved into an area where continuing by car was impractical, the officer exited his vehicle and proceeded on foot.

A bystander then offered his bicycle to the officer, which was accepted to continue the chase. The officer successfully apprehended the suspect on a towpath near the Twickenham Stoop stadium. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of stealing a pedal bicycle.

The officer contacted his team for backup and stated his intention to return the borrowed bicycle to its owner, whom he referred to as a "hero member of the public."

Metropolitan Police Inspector Jon McLoughlin commented on the incident, calling it a "great example of the public and police working together." He noted that the quick-thinking action of the cyclist who lent their bike made a significant difference in apprehending the suspect after a bicycle theft on Whitton High Street.
