A police officer has appeared in court facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving following a collision involving an e-bike that resulted in a teenage boy's death. Ryley Hutson, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident in Bramcote, Nottingham, in September of the previous year.
Nottinghamshire Police announced last month that Daniel Cartwright, a 31-year-old officer with the Bedfordshire constabulary, had been charged in connection with Hutson's death. Authorities confirmed that Cartwright was off-duty at the time of the incident.
Cartwright made a brief appearance before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on August 6, 2026. He spoke only to confirm his age, name, and address during the five-minute hearing. No pleas were entered at this stage. He was released on bail and is scheduled to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on September 3.
Detective Inspector Jamie Moore of Notts Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit stated that the incident has had a devastating impact on Ryley's family, who have been updated on the investigation's progress. He added that the force's thoughts remain with the family.
Family and friends of Ryley Hutson attended the court hearing, many wearing matching T-shirts with smiley faces. An online fundraiser established to support funeral costs and a memorial has raised over £4,000. Ryley's aunt, who started the page, remembered him as a vibrant individual who left a lasting impression on those who knew him. She highlighted the profound grief and unexpected financial burden the family is facing, aiming to honor his memory with the funds raised.
