Police K-9 Injured After Suspect Bites Off Part of Ear During Standoff
A barricaded suspect bit and tore off part of a police dog's ear during an apprehension in Redondo Beach, California.
A police K-9 named Wouter sustained a severe injury, losing part of his ear, after a barricaded suspect bit him during a takedown in Redondo Beach, California.
Wouter, a Dutch Shepherd, was deployed into a home earlier this week to assist officers in apprehending a suspect during a standoff. According to Redondo Beach police, the suspect bit the K-9 during the encounter, causing a portion of the dog's ear to be torn off.
The injured canine was transported to ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital for veterinary treatment and is currently recovering. Photos released by the Redondo Beach Police Department show Wouter wearing a protective cone, with a visible injury to the tip of his ear.
Redondo Beach police shared an update on social media, posting, “WHO’S A GOOD BOY?! WOUTER IS!”
Wouter, who was brought over from Holland, serves with Officer Adam Cook on the Redondo Beach Police K9 Team. Dutch Shepherds are described as highly intelligent, athletic, and loyal working dogs, making them well-suited for law enforcement operations.
Details regarding the specific reason for the suspect being wanted by police have not been released. Authorities have not yet indicated whether additional charges will be pursued in relation to the attack on K-9 Wouter. The department expressed well wishes for the dog's recovery, stating, “Wishing our bestest boy a speedy recovery, and want him to get all the scratchies and treats!”
