Devon and Cornwall Police have issued a dispersal order for Polzeath beach in Cornwall following a surge in anti-social behavior attributed to hundreds of private school pupils. The order, which came into effect on July 8 and was initially set to expire on July 10, aims to curb disturbances such as excessive alcohol consumption, public intoxication, littering, and vandalism.

Residents and holidaymakers have reported witnessing large groups of teenagers congregating on the beach, engaging in activities described as disruptive and, in some instances, illegal. Reports include smashed glasses, public sexual acts, and a significant amount of litter left behind. Local business owners have also expressed concerns, with one restaurant owner noting increased security costs and past incidents of theft and property damage by young visitors.

Beach ranger Andy Stewart, a former police officer, has been working to address these issues through prevention and education since 2019. However, on Tuesday night, Stewart reportedly encountered hostility from some individuals in a large group when asked to leave the area. This incident, along with escalating anti-social behavior, prompted the police to implement the dispersal order, a measure typically reserved for more severe public order disturbances.

Inspector Adam Stonehill of Devon and Cornwall Police stated that the force does not intend to disrupt lawful enjoyment but must address behavior that negatively impacts the local community, residents, and businesses. He noted a yearly increase in holidaymakers to the area, which often correlates with a rise in evening anti-social incidents, particularly among teenagers gathering on the beach. The current dispersal order reflects the police's commitment to maintaining public order and the well-being of all individuals in Polzeath.

Polzeath is a well-known holiday destination, attracting visitors including notable public figures. This year's incidents have been exacerbated by warm weather and potentially the ongoing football season, contributing to a perceived increase in boisterous behavior among the young visitors.
