Authorities are investigating a violent on-field assault that occurred during a high school soccer match in South Dakota, prompting calls for severe disciplinary action against the player involved.
The incident took place last week between the Brookings High School Bobcats and Rapid City Central Cobblers, just before halftime.
Following a collision on the field, a player identified as Jaxson Bergman of Rapid City Central confronted Kyler Soost of Brookings. Video footage shows Bergman shoving Soost to the ground, then kicking him in the back of the head and delivering a series of punches. The referee and coaches quickly intervened to stop the altercation. Bergman was shown a red card, and the game resumed after a 10-minute delay.
The fight was streamed live on YouTube and quickly gained traction on social media, with many viewers advocating for a lifetime ban for Bergman.
The Brookings Police Department has confirmed their involvement, stating that officers plan to interview over 100 witnesses and review extensive video evidence of the fight.
Dan Swartos, executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA), described the incident as an 'unacceptable scenario.' Under SDHSAA rules, any player receiving a red card must sit out the next game and complete a sportsmanship course.
Rapid City Central school officials stated that 'appropriate actions will be taken' and that Bergman could face expulsion. The Rapid City School District's code of conduct policy outlines potential suspension or expulsion for students found guilty of assaulting others during school property or school-sponsored events.
Dr. Summer Schultz, Superintendent of the Brookings School District, released a statement emphasizing that athletic participation is a privilege requiring sportsmanship, respect, and accountability. She added that while student disciplinary matters are private, the district is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for its students and learning from the experience.
