Police Investigate Potential Russian Link After Perimeter Breach at US Intelligence Base in UK

British authorities are investigating a potential link to Russia after two Latvian nationals breached the perimeter fence of RAF Molesworth, a Royal Air Force base in Cambridgeshire that houses significant US military intelligence operations.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m. when the two men, aged 36 and 32, were apprehended after crossing the fence. They were initially detained on suspicion of trespass and criminal damage but were later arrested under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023, which pertains to entering a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to the United Kingdom.

RAF Molesworth serves as a hub for American intelligence operations covering Europe and Africa and also functions as a NATO intelligence center. The base recently hosted a NATO conference that included Russian participation.

The security breach prompted a response from Counter Terrorism Policing and led to the deployment of explosive ordnance disposal officers to examine an abandoned vehicle found near the base's perimeter. Nothing suspicious was found, and the cordon was lifted. Police stated the incident is not currently linked to a separate investigation at RAF Fairford, where five men were arrested last month.

Authorities are exploring the possibility that the arrested men may be acting as proxies for a hostile state, though investigators emphasize they are keeping an open mind regarding other potential motives. Searches are being conducted at two addresses in the Peterborough area as part of the ongoing inquiry.

A spokesperson for US European Command affirmed that they will continue to assess the threat environment around their installations and implement protective measures. The Ministry of Defence reiterated its vigilance towards potential threats against defense sites and its commitment to working with police and allies to ensure their security.
