Police Investigate Hoax Bomb Threats at Scottish Schools

Police Scotland is investigating a series of hoax bomb threat emails that were sent to schools across Scotland.

The messages were received by educational institutions in areas including Glasgow, Edinburgh, East Renfrewshire, and East Lothian. The threat is believed to have been sent to both primary and secondary schools.

Similar emails were also sent to schools in Northern Ireland, claiming an explosive device had been placed in 160 schools. Northern Ireland's education minister stated that the threat was not being treated as viable.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed awareness of the threatening messages and stated, "These are being treated as a hoax and officers are investigating."

East Renfrewshire Council reported that many of its schools received a "malicious threat." The spokesperson added, "After notifying Police Scotland, the communication is being investigated as a hoax, and our schools are operating as normal."

At the time of the incidents, some pupils in Scotland were still on holiday, while others were in school for teacher in-service days. Schools in England and Wales were also on half-term breaks.
