Police Investigate Family Rift in Alleged Attack on Australian MP

Victoria Police are investigating a potential rift between the man accused of deliberately hitting Independent MP Helen Haines with a car and his family as part of their inquiries. Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing serious harm after Haines, 65, suffered severe lower-body injuries and underwent amputation of both legs following the alleged incident.

Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed on Friday that police are exploring the possibility that the alleged attack was a "proxy" for grievances involving Nugent's family. "Yes, it is," Bush told ABC Mildura when asked about this line of inquiry. "It sounds like a cliché, but every line of inquiry is open... Every action is under review."

Commissioner Bush also stated that Nugent's father, Rod, and his father's partner, Christine Cunningham, have been "very, very helpful" to the investigation. Nugent has not applied for bail and remains in custody. Haines, the federal MP for Indi, is in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.
