Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding a fatal encounter in Chino Hills where a suspect was killed by police after shooting a man and placing him in the trunk of a vehicle, according to officials.

The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department confirmed that they were serving a search warrant in the area related to a homicide that had occurred earlier in the day.

Authorities stated that the suspect shot the victim before placing them in the trunk of a car at their Montverde Drive home. The suspect then shot the victim again in front of deputies before being killed by law enforcement.

The incident began around 10:15 p.m. when a witness reported hearing gunshots and a cry for help. Police initiated a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle, but the driver refused to yield, leading to a short pursuit.

The chase ended at the 2400 block of Wandering Ridge Drive, where deputies were not initially aware of a kidnapping. Surveillance footage showed police stopping the car. A passenger exited the vehicle and approached deputies with their hands raised. However, the driver remained in the car before getting out, retrieving an item from the trunk, and then firing a shot into the trunk where the victim was located.

Deputies returned fire, killing the driver. The passenger, who complied with commands, was not injured and is in police custody. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Irvine Police Department shared via Instagram that the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department was serving a warrant in Crossover, near Benchmark, connected to the Chino Hills homicide. It remains unclear if this search warrant is directly tied to the suspect involved in the shooting. https://nypost.com/2026/07/31/us-news/cops-serve-search-warrant-tied-to-chino-hills-execution-of-man-inside-trunk/
