Police chiefs are raising alarms about a potential increase in violent crime, citing prison overcrowding that is leading to more individuals being released onto the streets. Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated he was "flabbergasted" by the growing number of suspects accused of gun and knife offenses who are being released before their trials.
Sir Mark indicated that he anticipates a rise in violent crime, noting that some offenders are being granted bail even when facing multiple charges for carrying weapons. This situation arises as Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to implement an early release scheme by the end of the year, which could free thousands of inmates.
Concerns have been voiced that dangerous individuals, including those accused of domestic abuse, may be released after serving only a third of their sentences. The issue prompts questions about whether the early release scheme should be reconsidered.
