Police Capture Machete-Wielding Suspect Using Undercover Tactics

Metropolitan Police officers apprehended a wanted suspect carrying a machete by employing an unconventional undercover operation. The man, identified as Roy Hallissey, was apprehended in Poplar, east London, after officers disguised themselves as a food delivery courier and a street cleaner.

Hallissey had been evading law enforcement, despite frequently visiting a local market. His pattern of avoiding the market when police were present prompted the creative approach. The officers, blending into the surroundings, approached Hallissey from different directions, catching him by surprise and preventing his escape.

During the arrest, a large machete was discovered concealed on Hallissey's person. He was already a wanted individual, having failed to appear for sentencing after being convicted of a stabbing. Additionally, he was being sought in connection with an alleged assault on an emergency worker, for which he had also missed a court date.

The arrest also revealed a breach of a criminal behavior order that prohibited Hallissey from being in the Poplar area. Insp. Frank Hartley stated that Hallissey was found in violation of the order and in possession of a dangerous weapon. He added that the police are committed to identifying, locating, and prosecuting wanted offenders to prevent further harm to communities.

Hallissey appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, May 29, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges. These included possessing a bladed article, breaching his criminal behavior order, driving without insurance, and driving while disqualified. He also admitted to assaulting police and escaping lawful custody. Sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7.
