Poland Scrambles Jets After Russian Helicopter Violates Airspace

Poland scrambled fighter jets on Wednesday morning after a Russian military helicopter briefly violated the nation's airspace, according to Poland's military.

The Mi-8 aircraft crossed from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, penetrating Polish airspace to a depth of about 300 meters (328 yards) north of Braniewo and remaining for 42 seconds. The Polish Army Operational Command stated the incident occurred at 11:08 a.m. local time and that the helicopter was tracked by radar. Poland's air defense units were reported to be operating around the clock to ensure the safety of Polish airspace.

Poland's military suggested the incident indicates "Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defence." Moscow has not yet commented on the accusation. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that Moscow does not plan to attack NATO states.

This event follows recent concerns from Poland and other European NATO members about potential Russian attacks aimed at testing their commitment to supporting Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated last week that Russia was planning drone and missile strikes against Poland and other countries on NATO's eastern flank, characterizing it as an "intensified" hybrid threat designed to "intimidate us and break our effort to support Ukraine."

French President Emmanuel Macron recently reported that France had also been targeted by Russian hybrid attacks and vowed a response, ordering a plan to protect critical infrastructure and defense industry sites. Hybrid attacks are described as non-military methods such as cyberattacks, sabotage, or misinformation, often employed using proxies.

There have been other recent incidents involving Russia and European NATO members. Earlier this month, Germany attributed a drone attack at Leipzig airport in August to Russia, an accusation denied by Moscow. Lithuania's prime minister recently stated that his country had made evacuation plans in response to threats from Russia. In September, a Russian drone struck a passenger train near Ukraine's border with Poland, which Ukraine suggested may have been targeting a diplomatic train.
