Pocognoli Frustrated by Scotland's Game Plan Collapse in Slovenia Defeat

Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli expressed significant frustration with his team's failure to adhere to their game plan during their recent 2-1 defeat against Slovenia. Pocognoli stated that tactical issues, rather than player fatigue, were the root cause of the disappointing result at Hampden.

"I was angry because we didn’t deliver what we expected to deliver," Pocognoli said. "From the first minute we were not compact, not proactive to defend forward. Many times, Slovenia players between the lines could get the ball, turn and face us, and with this speed in front of you, that can be a problem. It was that which frustrated me."

Pocognoli observed that his players appeared more tired than they actually were due to poor positioning, leading to them covering excessive distances. "It looks like they were tired because we were not well-positioned," he explained. "It was the same feeling in the first half. We were too far from the ball and just not in the right positions."

Despite Ryan Christie scoring an early goal for Scotland, Slovenia secured victory with second-half goals from Aljosa Matko and Danijel Sturm. Pocognoli had hoped to build on a positive performance against North Macedonia and establish a strong position in their group, but the loss has complicated their pursuit of second place.

During halftime, Pocognoli emphasized the need for compactness and maintaining shape, instructing his players to push forward together rather than retreating. He noted a brief period after the restart where his adjustments, including pushing Billy Gilmour into a more advanced role, seemed to yield more control and proactive pressing. "We started well in the first 10 to 15 minutes," he said. "With Billy on the ball a little bit higher we created three 10s, so we had more control of the game and we were more proactive to press."

However, the team's cohesion faltered once Slovenia equalized. Pocognoli believes the same tactical errors from the first half resurfaced. "Then we give away the first goal and we go back to a bad feeling. We start to drop again and give them similar situations to what we faced in the first half."

While Scotland captain Andy Robertson described the team as "outfought and not good enough," Pocognoli refrained from attributing the loss to a lack of effort, instead focusing on tactical shortcomings. He identified the Slovenia forwards' ability to dictate Scotland's defensive line as a particular disappointment.

"If you are 10 metres lower then everything is bigger through the lines," Pocognoli added. "We have to analyse why, but that’s for me the biggest disappointment."

The defeat places Scotland three points behind Slovenia, presenting an uphill challenge to secure second place and its associated seeding benefits for the Euro 2028 draw. Despite this setback, Pocognoli maintains a long-term perspective, having introduced new players and experimented with tactics during his initial four-match tenure. He views the lessons learned from this camp, including the need for tactical improvement, as valuable for the future. "The points aspect is important," he conceded. "The ranking is that we are in third position with four points. That’s not where we want to be. We want to combine good results with the good feeling that we had sometimes and we couldn’t deliver that. If you look at the big picture, I hope this camp will make sense in the future."
