Pochettino Praises MLS for Developing Young Talent Amidst USMNT Call-Ups

U.S. men's national team coach Mauricio Pochettino has expressed his admiration for Major League Soccer's dedication to nurturing young talent, observing the league's growth firsthand during the Hudson River Derby at Yankee Stadium.

Pochettino's comments come as the USMNT prepares for its first camp since the World Cup, with a significant number of players called up from MLS. The squad includes 12 players from the domestic league, nine of whom are making their senior national team debut. Notably, Red Bull New York stars Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti, both teenagers, have earned their first call-ups.

"It's an unbelievable job the MLS is doing, giving the possibilities to the young [players]," Pochettino told reporters. "The clubs giving the [opportunities] to 17- and 16-year-olds, playing 18-year-olds. I think that is an amazing thing that shows that this is very healthy and we have amazing talent in the youth. And the clubs in the MLS are doing a very good job."

Pochettino was in attendance to watch the derby between the Red Bulls and New York City FC, both of which feature players selected for the upcoming USMNT camp. He acknowledged the potential of young players like Hall and Mehmeti but cautioned against placing excessive expectations on them.

"Careful, I think they're young. … Of course, they deserve [to be here] and we need to pay attention to them, but relax," he said when asked about the two New York-based prospects. Pochettino emphasized his focus on providing these players with the tools for continued development, aiming to help them become "better players and better [people]." He did not confirm if either player would feature in the upcoming friendlies against Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada.

With his contract as USMNT head coach extending through 2030, Pochettino is focused on shaping the program according to his vision. He reiterated his desire for players who are unequivocally committed to representing the United States.

"We want players that commit and are desperate to play for the badge and play for us," Pochettino stated. "That is the most important thing. It's a thing that we need to deal with because we're in a country where that happens often, but I think the organization is so strong. USA Soccer is an organization that is over any player, any name, any dual national.

"I think the most important thing is the players have no doubt, when showing us, have no doubt that they want to die for that shield."

This statement comes after the USMNT learned that prized dual-national defender Noahkai Banks opted to play for Germany internationally, rather than the United States. Pochettino confirmed that Banks had informed the U.S. Soccer Federation of his decision prior to its public announcement.
