Emmet Moynihan, 31, was fined £3,199 after pleading guilty to being drunk on an aircraft and disobeying the orders of the captain. The incident occurred on August 6, when the plane was grounded at Heathrow Airport due to delays.
Moynihan, who was traveling to Las Vegas for a stag do, insisted on using the toilet while the aircraft was still on the tarmac. Footage from the flight shows him being repeatedly asked by a flight attendant to return to his seat. He responded with expletives and continued to shout abuse at staff and the 331 passengers onboard.
Due to Moynihan's behavior, the aircraft was forced to abandon its takeoff and return to the terminal. Armed officers then escorted him from the plane.
Moynihan's defense stated that he had been drinking with friends prior to boarding and that he needed to use the toilet due to a further short delay. His legal representative also argued that filming by other passengers aggravated the situation, which has since gone viral on social media.
During sentencing, Magistrate Mrs Joseph JP described the offense as "very, very serious," noting that it was fortunate the plane had not yet taken off, which prevented the case from being escalated to Crown Court. She added that Moynihan had accepted he had an alcohol problem, as evidenced by his visits to Alcoholics Anonymous.
A British Airways spokesperson stated that disruptive or abusive behavior is not tolerated and that the safety of passengers and crew is paramount, with appropriate action always taken in such incidents.
