Plaza Hotel Closure Leaves Brides Scrambling as Wedding Dreams Canceled
New York's iconic Plaza Hotel will close for at least four years for restoration, disrupting numerous planned weddings and leaving couples scrambling for new venues.
The legendary Plaza Hotel in New York City has announced it will close for extensive restoration work for at least four years, shattering wedding dreams for numerous couples who had booked the iconic venue. The landmark Fifth Avenue hotel is set to shut its doors in January, with the closure impacting couples who had spent months, and in some cases years, planning their celebrations.
Some brides discovered the shocking news not through direct communication from the hotel, but via social media, text messages, or friends. Christine Carney, 38, who had dreamed of marrying at the Plaza since childhood and booked her May 1 wedding nearly a year in advance for 200 guests, found out when a friend sent her a text. After a seven-minute wait on the phone, a concierge confirmed her venue would no longer be available. Carney expressed frustration and anxiety over the lack of guidance regarding her deposit and the challenge of finding a new venue for 200 guests on short notice, especially with spring wedding dates notoriously difficult to secure.
The disruption extends to wedding planners as well. Alyssa Pettinato, owner of Alinato Events, who was organizing Carney's wedding, faces the prospect of re-planning the entire celebration without additional payment and with vendors, such as the wedding band, proving difficult to reschedule. Pettinato noted that even long-term hotel staff seemed blindsided by the announcement, suggesting a lack of preparation.
Hannah Livingstone, 30, from Scotland, had planned an intimate February wedding to James McPherson, including an eight-night stay in a Plaza suite and first-class flights. She had spent approximately $9,000 on these arrangements and was corresponding with hotel staff just weeks prior, with no indication of an impending closure. Livingstone stumbled upon the news on TikTok and expressed disbelief that the hotel continued to take bookings and communicate normally. While the couple still intends to marry in New York on the same date, finding a venue with the same prestige and atmosphere is proving difficult.
The Plaza Hotel attributes the extensive closure to the complexity of restoring its landmark-protected façade, citing safety considerations. Wedding planners suggest that while the hotel's interiors might benefit from a modernization, its reputation is unparalleled. Casey Kaufman, founder of Imagine Party and Events, noted that some clients have found the hotel's interiors dated, with her team having to effectively reconfigure event spaces for past weddings. Kaufman estimates that weddings at the Plaza can cost over $1,200 per guest, with lavish affairs potentially exceeding $500,000.
The closure will also impact New York's social traditions, including the annual Petroushka Ball hosted by the Russian Children's Welfare Society, and other signature experiences like the Eloise Suite offerings and "Home Alone 2"-themed events.
For affected couples and planners, the most pressing issue is the uncertainty surrounding deposits. Pettinato believes the hotel should refund all affected couples without resistance to protect its reputation, stating that fighting such a situation would be "immoral."
