Plaza Hotel Closure Disrupts High-Profile Weddings, Events
Iconic New York hotel's four-year renovation sparks chaos for brides and event planners.
The legendary Plaza Hotel in New York City is set to close for at least four years beginning in January, leaving numerous couples and event planners scrambling to rebook high-profile weddings and other luxury events. The sudden announcement has created a cascade of disruptions, with many clients expressing shock and frustration over the lack of communication and the potential loss of deposits.
Christine Carney, whose May wedding was booked a year in advance, discovered the closure when a friend texted her. After a seven-minute hold with the hotel's concierge, she was informed her 200-guest wedding no longer had a venue. "We haven’t yet had anyone from the Plaza reach out to tell us what next steps are and what happens with our money," Carney stated, noting that deposits for photographers, bands, flowers, and rentals were already paid. "Everything for spring books up so quickly we would have to hope they’re willing to refund us so we can find a replacement, or we’d have to eat the deposit and find a replacement anyway."
Wedding planner Alyssa Pettinato, whose firm was organizing Carney's wedding, described the situation as a significant professional and financial setback, as planners are often not compensated for such disruptions. "Technically, we are getting penalized as planners," Pettinato said. "Am I allowed to ask them for payment for this?" She noted that this is the third wedding she has had to replan this year due to venue issues, but the scale and prestige of the Plaza make this closure particularly shocking. Pettinato added that many long-term hotel staff members appeared blindsided, suggesting poor communication leading up to the announcement.
Hannah Livingstone, a bride from Scotland, booked a $9,000 suite and first-class flights for an intimate February wedding at the Plaza, having planned specific moments like a first look in the hotel's bar. She learned of the closure via TikTok, just weeks after confirming her booking with the hotel. "It’s a bit mad to me that they’ve still been taking bookings and still being in contact like things are as normal," Livingstone said, expressing stress and disappointment given the timing, as her hen do was approaching.
The hotel management cited extensive and complex restoration work on its landmark-protected façade as the reason for the closure. However, some event professionals suggest that interior renovations may also be a factor, noting that the hotel's interiors have begun to show their age. Casey Kaufman, founder of Imagine Party and Events, estimated that weddings at the Plaza can cost upwards of $1,200 per guest, with elaborate celebrations reaching $500,000 or more. Kaufman pointed out that renovations at the Waldorf Astoria have made it a competitive venue, and speculated the Plaza might be using the closure to update its spaces.
The closure extends beyond weddings, impacting other high-profile events. The Russian Children's Welfare Society announced its annual Petroushka Ball, a fixture of New York's charity circuit, can no longer be held at the Plaza. Other signature experiences, such as celebrations in the Eloise Suite or the "Home Alone 2 experience," will also be paused.
Pettinato expressed hope that the hotel would handle deposit refunds ethically, stating, "Something of the caliber of The Plaza, like I would expect them to give everyone a refund and not even fight that." The Plaza Hotel has provided only a public statement in response to inquiries, offering no specific details regarding affected bookings or refund policies.
