Player Ratings: Liverpool vs. Manchester City
A look at how individual players performed in the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City.
Manchester City's Rayan Cherki received the highest rating with an 8, capping off a memorable day for the club with a well-taken goal. Erling Haaland also scored a crucial goal and earned an 8, despite a quiet first half and a missed early second-half chance.
For Liverpool, Victor Munoz and Lewis Koumas were standouts, both earning a 7 for their energetic and fearless performances. Koumas, in particular, impressed in his first Premier League start.
Despite the individual performances, Liverpool struggled as a team. Goalkeeper Alisson conceded to Haaland's strike and a subsequent spectacular goal from Jeremy Doku, receiving a rating of 5. Ronald Araujo was also cautioned early and was on the wrong side of the play for the first two City goals, earning a 5. Virgil van Dijk was often stretched to cover midfield overloads and could have closed down Haaland quicker, earning a 6. Alexis Mac Allister grew into the game but found it difficult after Liverpool went down to 10 men, also receiving a 5.
Ryan Gravenberch was Liverpool's best player until his dismissal for a second yellow card, a moment described as naive. He received a 6. Florian Wirtz was largely ineffective and made poor decisions, scoring a 4, while Bradley Barcola did his defensive duties but needed to contribute more offensively, getting a 5. Koumas, who started his first match, received a 7 for his energetic display.
Substitutions for Liverpool included Nyoni (6) for Wirtz, Frimpong (5) for Araujo, Ngumoha (5) for Koumas, Gomez, and Chiesa, who came on late in the game.
On the Manchester City side, Gianluigi Donnarumma made several good saves in the second half to keep the game level, earning a 7 despite a shaky start. Matheus Nunes delivered an impressive display, including a crucial tackle on Barcola, and was rated 7. Defenders Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi both had strong performances at center-half, contributing to weathering Liverpool's early pressure, with both earning 7s. Nico O'Reilly was solid going forward but had defensive challenges against Munoz, receiving a 6. Elliot Anderson provided the assist for Doku's goal and was involved throughout, though he was fortunate not to receive a booking, earning a 7. Enzo Fernandez forced a save from Alisson and grew into the game after Liverpool's red card, receiving a 6. Iliman Ndiaye was dangerous before being replaced by Doku, earning a 6.
City substitutes included Doku (8), who scored a spectacular goal after coming on for Ndiaye. Gvardiol (7) replaced O'Reilly, while Allan and Bouaddi also featured late in the game. Unused substitutes for City were Rulli, Kovacic, Reis, Khusanov, and Lewis.
