Plane Passenger Sparks Debate Over Window Seat Etiquette
A TikTok video detailing a dispute with a child over a window shade has divided social media users.
A recent incident on a flight has ignited a heated discussion about window seat etiquette, after a passenger clashed with a crying child over the shade.
Sharna Kite, a passenger seated next to the window, posted a video on TikTok showing her repeatedly raising the window blind, only for a toddler in the row ahead to pull it back down. The child could be heard crying in the background during the exchange.
The video, which has garnered over 7.4 million views, prompted a significant response in the comments section. Some users sided with the child, suggesting that passengers should be more considerate of children's potential discomfort with light. One comment read, "Everyone saying kids are so annoying but have we thought about how the kid might be annoyed too?"
Conversely, many users supported Kite's stance, arguing that the passenger in the window seat should have control over the shade. "If you have to reach back then it's not your window," one commenter stated. Another user, identifying as a parent, expressed dismay, "As a parent I would NEVER let my kid do that! They have to respect others and learn the concept of no too!"
While there is no official airline protocol dictating window shade usage during normal flight, the generally accepted unwritten rule is that the passenger occupying the window seat has the prerogative to control the shade. However, flight attendants retain the ultimate authority and can direct passengers to open or close shades for safety or cabin comfort reasons.
