Pizza Worker Targeted in Cruel Prank Receives Over $680,000 in Donations
A viral video of a Red Baron pizza delivery worker's heartbreaking reaction to a prank has led to a massive outpouring of support and donations.
A widely shared video captured the moment a Red Baron pizza delivery worker, identified as Walt Z., was confronted by a prankster while stocking frozen pizzas at a Meijer grocery store in White Lake, Michigan. The prankster approached Walt, asked for the time, and then simulated an Apple Pay transaction, claiming to have stolen $10 from him.
Walt expressed distress and frustration, explaining that the prank was unwelcome given his existing struggles. He told the prankster, "My life is hard enough as it is." He elaborated that he was already late getting home, his children had gone to bed without him, and he had to wake up early for work the next day. He also mentioned difficulties with his mortgage payments. The interaction escalated as Walt became more upset while the prankster insisted it was just a joke.
The footage quickly gained traction on social media, drawing widespread criticism of the prankster and significant support for Walt. Online commenters expressed empathy for the worker, with one user on X writing, "There’s a guy like him in every grocery store in America, grinding through the shift nobody sees. Turning one of them into the punchline isn’t edgy. It’s lazy."
In response to the incident, a GoFundMe campaign was established for Walt. As of October 31, the fundraiser had amassed over $679,000 from more than 19,000 donations, with all proceeds intended for Walt.
Red Baron publicly supported its employee following the video's circulation. The company stated on X, "He’s still here. He’s got a fan club. Including us," humorously suggesting Walt could be named "employee of the month."
Red Baron confirmed to Fox News Digital that the incident occurred in August and involved a member of their Direct Store Delivery team. The company has been in contact with Walt to ensure his well-being, continues to offer support, and is collaborating with retail partners to promote a safe and respectful workplace. Red Baron also reassured the public that Walt is doing well and remains a valued member of their team, addressing concerns that he might lose his job over the incident.
Despite the public attention, Red Baron noted that Walt is grateful for the support but has requested privacy. In an update on the GoFundMe page, Walt expressed his gratitude to donors and supporters, stating that the kindness and encouragement shown to him and his family meant more than words could convey. He also asked that their privacy be respected.
