Pizza Hut is adopting a temporary new identity, rebranding as simply 'Hut' for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. This 25-week name change, announced on social media, is a nod to a well-known football phrase and is already visible on some restaurant signage, with the word 'Pizza' covered by a football-themed banner.

The company has also updated its social media branding to reflect the temporary name change. This marketing effort builds on previous NFL-related campaigns, including a January advertisement featuring former quarterback Tom Brady that played on the phrase "pizza before the Hut."

This rebranding initiative is occurring as Pizza Hut undergoes significant ownership changes. In June, its parent company, Yum Brands, agreed to sell the chain to private equity firm LongRange Capital for approximately $1.5 billion. This sale encompasses Pizza Hut's operations outside of mainland China, while Yum China Holdings will manage the mainland China business in a separate transaction valued at about $1.2 billion. Buyers have indicated that the deal is intended to drive the brand's next phase of growth.

The sale follows a period of financial challenges for Pizza Hut. The company announced plans to close 250 underperforming restaurants as part of a restructuring effort. In the previous year, US same-store sales declined by five percent, a notable contrast to competitors like Domino's. In 2025, Pizza Hut accounted for roughly 12 percent of Yum Brands' revenue, but it has experienced ten consecutive quarters of declining comparable sales in the U.S.

While the ownership transition is unlikely to result in immediate changes for consumers regarding menus or loyalty programs, it marks a significant turnaround attempt for the restaurant chain. The sale also allows Yum! Brands to concentrate more resources on its faster-growing KFC and Taco Bell brands. Despite its recent struggles, Pizza Hut remains one of the largest pizza chains globally, with nearly 20,000 restaurants worldwide.
