Pittsburgh High School Football Game Disrupted by Gunfire
A live television interview was cut short as gunshots erupted outside a Pittsburgh high school football game, leading to chaos and injuries.
Chaos erupted at Pittsburgh's George K. Cupples Stadium on Thursday night when gunshots were fired outside the venue, interrupting a live television interview and causing players to flee for safety.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. following Westinghouse Academy's 35-0 victory over University Prep. As a Westinghouse player was being interviewed by 22 The Point, the sound of gunfire could be heard in the distance. The interview was abruptly ended as players and attendees reacted to the shots.
Police reported that the shots were fired amid a large crowd gathered on Carson Street, where fights had broken out as the game concluded. Officers from the city and Port Authority were on site to manage the crowd and break up altercations when an individual discharged a firearm multiple times.
Following the shooting, three teenagers—two males and one female—were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Authorities stated they are believed to be in stable condition. The shooter remains at large as police continue their investigation.
In response to the incident, Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Wayne Walters announced new security measures for subsequent football games. These included an age restriction for fans (over 18), increased police and security presence, directives for fans to remain in the stands, and a ban on loitering outside the stadium.
"Our thoughts are with the young people who were injured, their families, and all of the students, staff and community members impacted by this deeply troubling incident," the school district said in a statement released Friday morning.
