Pilates Helps Senior Golden Retriever Regain Mobility

A 15-year-old Golden Retriever, affectionately known as Weasel, has captured viral attention after a daily dose of Pilates significantly improved his mobility. Weasel experienced an abrupt loss of mobility a few months ago, prompting his owner, Jillian Loustaunau, to seek ways to help him maintain his existing movement.

Loustaunau, who is a Pilates instructor and owner of Movmint Pilates in Kailua, Hawaii, noticed similarities between her canine's rehabilitation exercises and the movements she teaches humans. Inspired by the practice's founder, Joseph Pilates, who developed the method by observing animal movements, Loustaunau began incorporating Pilates equipment into Weasel's routine.

She introduced Weasel to the reformer, Cadillac, Chair CoreAlign, and ladder barrel machines. According to Loustaunau, Weasel not only enjoys using the equipment but has shown remarkable progress, regaining nearly 100% of his mobility within three months. She documented his journey on his Instagram page, @paw.lates, where a video of him using the machines garnered 1.8 million views.

Motivated by Weasel's success, Loustaunau launched a virtual class called "Pawlates 101" to assist other dogs facing similar mobility challenges. Online commenters expressed admiration for Weasel's recovery and Loustaunau's dedication, with some noting the inclusive nature of Pilates and others praising her care for her senior pet. While a few commenters expressed skepticism, Loustaunau responded that the exercises enable Weasel to enjoy activities like running, fetching, and swimming at the beach.
