Motorists encountered significant delays on the A127 at Dunton, near Basildon, on Sunday afternoon when a herd of about 20 pigs brought traffic to a halt. The animals were seen darting between vehicles, leading authorities to close the road.

Firearms officers from Essex Police were deployed and made the decision to fatally shoot five of the pigs, citing the perceived danger the animals posed to road users. The remaining pigs were safely captured.

A spokesperson for Essex Police stated that the decision to use firearms was "not taken lightly." The origin of the pigs remains unknown.
