Pierre Engvall Fights for Roster Spot with Islanders
With four years and $12 million remaining on his contract, Pierre Engvall faces an uphill battle to prove his worth to the New York Islanders.
Pierre Engvall is in a critical position to demonstrate his value to the New York Islanders, as he fights for a spot on the team's 23-man roster. Having missed the entirety of the previous season due to hip and ankle surgeries, Engvall's remaining contract—four years and $12 million—is no longer a guaranteed factor in his roster standing.
Coach Pete DeBoer made Engvall's situation explicit, placing him on a line with Daylan Kuefler and Mitchell Chaffee during training camp. "There's a big group of other forwards there, Engvall included, that are trying to make a case for themselves," DeBoer stated. Engvall acknowledged the difficulty of his situation, saying, "It's obviously tough to be out of the team for that long. Just every day, rehab can be tough. I had a good team around me that helped me. Made it good for me, so I'm just glad to be back."
The Islanders' roster is currently crowded with forwards, intensifying the competition for available spots. Players like Victor Eklund are vying for a place, while veterans such as Ondrej Palat and Anthony Duclair are working to retain theirs. Mitchell Chaffee, who previously played under Mathieu Darche in Tampa Bay, also brings NHL experience to the mix. With a condensed training camp, making the final roster will require difficult decisions.
DeBoer emphasized the need for efficiency in the shortened training camp. The Islanders held an intrasquad scrimmage on the second day of camp, a measure taken to maximize competitive situations. "If I'm going to make an error — and there's no right answer for it, I don't think anyone knows — we're going to make an error on trying to get into as many competitive situations as we can here before we get up and running," he explained.
Systems work has been a primary focus for DeBoer, and he noted that less line experimentation is expected this year due to the limited time. The team must also quickly integrate power play and penalty killing units. "We've got to get to power play and penalty killing, too. That's the challenge for us. In the short camp, the small number of games, small number of practices we have, we've got to try and get up to speed as quickly as possible," DeBoer said.
During the scrimmage, Kuefler exited the ice with an apparent injury to his right leg, and there was no immediate update on his status. Quinn Finley was observed practicing in a red non-contact jersey.
