Pierce Brosnan and his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, recently marked their 25th wedding anniversary, celebrating a love story that has endured through personal tragedy and public life.
The couple, who first met in 1994, have often been described as one of Hollywood's great love stories. Their connection formed at a time when Brosnan was still grieving the loss of his first wife, Cassandra Harris, who died of ovarian cancer in 1991 at the age of 43.
Brosnan, who was married to Harris from 1980, has spoken candidly about the profound impact of her death. He and Harris had a son, Sean, and Brosnan also adopted her two children, Charlotte and Christopher. Charlotte later died at age 41 from the same disease that claimed her mother's life.
"There is an incredible cruelty in it all, losing a person you shared everything with," Brosnan told People in 1992. "This is the first time in my life I've ever experienced bereavement, and it's overwhelming."
It was Keely Shaye Smith who helped him navigate this grief. "Keely has always been kind and compassionate and encouraged me to mourn Cassie," Brosnan shared with the Mail on Sunday in 2013. He added that he "strongly love[s] every curve of her body" and that he is "very proud of her."
Smith, a journalist and documentary filmmaker, grew up in Oahu, Hawaii, and has focused much of her work on ocean conservation. The couple first met in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where Smith was on assignment. Brosnan recalled finding her "captivating" with a "mischievous sparkle in his eyes."
Their relationship blossomed, and they welcomed two sons: Dylan, born in 1997, and Paris, born in 2001. The couple married in August 2001 at Ballintubber Abbey in Ireland.
Over their 25 years of marriage, Brosnan has consistently defended Smith against online criticism, particularly regarding her appearance. He has often expressed his deep admiration for her, stating in a 2011 interview, "I found a great woman in Keely Shaye. Not if I searched a million times over would I find one as good."
Brosnan attributes the longevity of their marriage to mutual enjoyment and a shared journey through life's challenges. "You know, it's just solving one problem after the [other], whether it's the washing machine or how far the finances are going to go or what your dreams are... But, ultimately, we just enjoy each other's company enormously," he told Fox News in 2023. He also described their journey together as a "very spiritual journey."
