Pickleball Giant The Picklr Files for Bankruptcy

The Picklr, a prominent chain of indoor pickleball facilities with over 70 locations across the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company submitted its filing in Texas on October 9, seeking to restructure its finances and renegotiate lease agreements.

Founder and CEO Jorge Barragan acknowledged that the company's rapid expansion led to unsustainable financial obligations. "We signed, unfortunately, too many corporate guarantees that landed on the holding company, and that's on us. I own it," Barragan stated, referring to lease agreements for early franchisees that the parent company guaranteed.

Approximately 40 locations were affected by these corporate guarantees, which ultimately became a significant burden. The Chapter 11 filing is intended to allow The Picklr to reorganize and work with landlords to make franchise locations more viable, rather than leading to widespread closures.

The company emphasized that its clubs remain operational, and members can continue playing as usual. "Our clubs are open. Our members are playing," a company statement confirmed.

Founded in 2021 and franchising since 2023, The Picklr experienced a surge in growth fueled by the increasing popularity of pickleball. However, this expansion came with considerable financial pressure. In 2025, the company reported a net loss of $4.4 million on $10.3 million in revenue. By the end of March, its total liabilities had reached approximately $19 million.

To support the reorganization, an investor group led by franchisee and investor Tom Neale has committed $4.8 million in sponsorship and $4.5 million in financing, pending court approval. Neale expressed confidence in the business model, stating, "We're convinced that the model works," and that the restructuring will enable the company to address its challenges.

The bankruptcy filing follows recent staff reductions, which Barragan described as a necessary step in preparation for the restructuring process. While the company aims to avoid location closures directly resulting from the filing, Barragan indicated that some contraction might occur. The primary goal is to position franchisees for long-term success over the next 18 months to two years, enabling them to continue operating throughout their lease terms.
