Phone Addiction Leads Half of Teenage Girls to Miss Sports and Social Activities, Study Finds
New research indicates a significant decline in physical and social engagement among 15-year-old girls, with a majority preferring indoor, screen-based activities over sports and outings with friends.
A recent study has revealed that a substantial number of teenage girls are sacrificing sports and social engagements due to phone addiction. According to the research, two in five 15-year-old girls report rarely leaving their bedrooms except for school, and one in five spends no evenings out with friends weekly.
The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) identified that over 250,000 15-year-olds in England are spending the majority of their time in their rooms, marking a 50 percent increase across both sexes since 2002. One participant shared, "Since I got my new phone I don't want to come out my bedroom, and I've been more short-tempered and not feeling as energetic and active as I used to be."
This shift towards sedentary screen time has led to a decline in participation in sports and outdoor hobbies. The study found that half of teenage girls avoid school sports, citing concerns about their skill level, compared to 38 percent of boys.
In its report, titled "Inactive Nation: Getting England's Teenagers Moving," the CSJ highlighted the detrimental effects of these increasingly isolated lifestyles on the physical and mental health of girls.
Tabby Fitzgerald, Senior Researcher at the CSJ, commented, "Too many teenage girls are retreating into their bedrooms and onto screens while the independence that should be part of coming of age slips away. The answer is not just to restrict social media, but to put something better in its place. Sport and physical activity are good for our health, our resilience and for the friends we make along the way."
Further contributing to the low activity rates, one in five girls stated that their school offers no physical activities they enjoy. Seven in ten girls indicated they would be more active if there was a wider variety of sports available at school.
