Philly Teacher Outed as White After Claiming Palestinian Heritage

Hannah Gann, a Philadelphia teacher and activist who claimed to have Palestinian heritage, has been exposed as a white Jewish woman of considerable wealth and privilege. Gann admitted to her deception in an Instagram post, where she stated, "I lied about my identity and have been lying for years. I have no Palestinian or Tunisian heritage."

She further confessed, "I am a white woman of significant privilege and wealth. Anyone who supported me was manipulated and should not be judged as a result of their support for me." Gann, who presented herself as a mixed-race individual with Black and Palestinian ancestry, is reportedly of Jewish heritage and has family ties to Israeli settlers.

Her alleged deception was brought to light by members of the Racial Justice Organizing Committee and Philly Educators for Palestine. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, these groups confronted Gann, leading to her admission. The organizations expressed their shock and anger, stating they were "stunned, saddened and angered by this betrayal."

In materials for a 2024 event discussing events in Gaza, Gann was identified as a Palestinian-American. She admitted to concealing her true background from everyone in her life, including her own family, to maintain the facade. Gann stated that she allowed "half-truths and obfuscations to grow into outright lies" because she "genuinely wanted to commit to the work I was doing."

Gann's actions have drawn comparisons to Rachel Dolezal, the former NAACP president who gained notoriety for falsely claiming to be Black despite being white. Community members have dubbed Gann the "Palestinian Rachel Dolezal" due to the similarities in their alleged deceptions.
