Philadelphia's chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has asserted that the backlash to its recent boycott of Jewish-owned businesses constitutes political repression. The group maintains that criticism of their demonstration, which took place on the eve of Kristallnacht, is unwarranted and serves to belittle their message.

In a statement, the Philly DSA criticized elected officials, including Senator Fetterman, Congressman Boyle, Governor Shapiro, Mayor Parker, and Council President Johnson, for what they characterized as a "chorus of bad-faith and dangerous conflation of antisemitism with anti-Zionism." The group also took issue with comparisons of the boycott to Kristallnacht, arguing that such comparisons trivialize trauma and suppress political speech.

"These condemnations were not good-faith conversations about tactics," the DSA stated. The organization expressed surprise at the negative reaction, particularly in light of recent election results, which they viewed as indicative of "growing opposition to Israel’s genocide in Palestine."

The DSA further contended that the outcry represented "an unacceptable use of political power, designed to delegitimize and chill acts of solidarity in the fight for Palestinian liberation, weaponized against the very people who helped put these politicians in office."

The boycott, organized by Philly Bike On Your Left, targeted several Jewish-owned businesses in the Rittenhouse Square area. However, the demonstration was reportedly cut short due to the presence of hundreds of counter-protesters who rallied in support of the businesses. Organizers attributed the early termination to safety concerns and claimed the event had been "grossly misrepresented."

One unidentified man participating in the boycott admitted to The Post that he was unsure why Mac Mart, one of the targeted businesses, was included, noting it had no apparent ties to Israel. Marti Lieberman, co-owner of Mac Mart, suggested that her business was targeted due to her Jewish identity, citing her wearing a Star of David necklace while working.
