Phillies Win Game 2 Against Braves on Historic ABS Challenge

The Philadelphia Phillies kept their season alive with a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 2 of the wild-card series, clinched by a historic automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge in the 10th inning. This marks the first time the ABS system has been used at the major league level to conclude a playoff game.

With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the 10th, the Phillies' Andrew Painter delivered an 0-2 fastball to Atlanta's Dominic Smith. Home plate umpire Andrew Beck initially ruled the pitch a ball, but Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto challenged the call. The system confirmed the pitch had clipped the inside corner, resulting in strike three and ending the game.

The decisive moment came after a back-and-forth contest. The Braves had taken a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning following a misplayed fly ball by Bryce Harper, which allowed Drake Baldwin to score. A sacrifice fly by Matt Olson extended Atlanta's lead. However, the Phillies responded in the eighth inning with solo home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Harper, tying the game.

Alec Bohm then hit a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 10th inning off reliever Didier Fuentes. Painter, typically a starter, made a significant contribution from the bullpen, throwing three scoreless innings and recording three strikeouts, all in the final frame.

The use of the ABS challenge to end a playoff game is a notable event. While this is the first instance in MLB, a Triple-A game concluded with a similar ABS-influenced decision recently when the Oklahoma City Comets won the Triple-A National Championship.

The series will now head to a decisive Game 3 in Atlanta, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
