Phillies' Managerial Search Continues After Alex Cora Declines Offer

The Philadelphia Phillies' search for a new manager has taken a turn after Alex Cora, a prominent figure in recent managerial discussions, declined an offer to lead the franchise. This development leaves General Manager Dave Dombrowski to reassess his options and compile a new shortlist of candidates.

Don Mattingly, who took over as interim manager and led the Phillies to a 79-55 record and a playoff berth, is considered a leading candidate to retain the position. Mattingly has expressed his interest in the role, stating, “I think I would like to do it.” The club had previously appeared unlikely to keep their interim manager but may reconsider after his successful tenure.

Dombrowski, who has worked with respected managers such as Tony La Russa and Jim Leyland, had previously identified Cora as a top-tier talent. In April, Dombrowski described Cora as “one of the finest managers in the game of baseball” with the potential to reach the same echelon as Hall of Fame managers.

Should Mattingly not be ultimately selected, other potential candidates are emerging. Rocco Baldelli, the third-winningest manager in Twins history with a career record of 527-505 and a Manager of the Year award in 2019, is seen as a highly credentialed option. Brad Ausmus, currently the Yankees' bench coach, also presents a potential choice, given his past close working relationship with Dombrowski in Detroit.

Previously, reports indicated that Mattingly's departure was considered a near certainty if the Phillies were able to secure Cora. However, Cora's decision to turn down the offer has potentially opened the door for Mattingly to continue as the Phillies' manager beyond the interim period.
