Phillies Appoint Don Mattingly as Full-Time Manager
The Philadelphia Phillies have officially named Don Mattingly their full-time manager, signing him to a two-year deal after an interim period that saw the team's performance improve.
The Philadelphia Phillies have removed the interim tag from Don Mattingly's title, officially appointing him as the team's full-time manager. The club announced the decision on Wednesday, confirming a two-year contract for the veteran.
Mattingly took over as interim manager during the season after the Phillies parted ways with Rob Thomson. The team had a 9-19 record at the time of the change. Under Mattingly's leadership, the Phillies achieved a 73-45 record over their subsequent 118 games, although they experienced a late-season slump, losing five of their last 15 contests. The team ultimately concluded its season by losing in the National League Wild Card Series to the Atlanta Braves.
This appointment marks Mattingly's third managerial role, having previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins. Prior to his interim role with the Phillies, he served as the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2023 through their 2025 pennant-winning season. Mattingly's career in professional baseball began in 1979, and the 2025 World Series marked his first appearance in the Fall Classic, which he did not win.
The Phillies' core players, including Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber, are under contract, as are pitchers Aaron Nola and Christopher Sanchez, providing a stable foundation for the team's future.
It is noted that Mattingly's son, Preston, holds the position of general manager for the team.
