Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte was arrested on Friday following a court order related to charges of publicly threatening to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and two other individuals. The arrest comes after Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in May on similar charges, as well as allegations of financial impropriety.

Duterte's legal team stated she intends to post bail to avoid detention while the case proceeds. Her lawyer, Paul Lawrence Lim, said in a statement that the vice president "has no intention of evading the law and will continue to exercise all her legal remedies."

The charges are connected to remarks made by Duterte during a 2024 online news conference, where she allegedly threatened to have Marcos, his wife, and then-House Speaker Martin Romualdez killed if she herself was harmed. She later clarified that her statement was not a direct threat to Marcos but an expression of concern for her own safety amid escalating political disputes. The remarks triggered a criminal investigation and raised national security concerns.

The current political friction is part of a significant showdown between Duterte and her rival, President Marcos Jr. The two were running mates in the 2022 elections, forming an alliance that combined the influence of two prominent political dynasties. However, this union reportedly disintegrated rapidly.

Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, faces potential disqualification from holding public office and prohibition from seeking the presidency in 2028 if convicted. Her father, Rodrigo Duterte, is currently facing trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague for alleged crimes against humanity related to his administration's anti-drug campaign.

Political and Geopolitical Divides

Last May, allies of President Marcos Jr. in the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to impeach Vice President Duterte. The impeachment articles cited alleged unexplained wealth, misuse of confidential state funds, and the threats against the president, his wife, and Romualdez. The Philippine Senate, acting as an impeachment court, began her televised trial in July.

The political landscape is further complicated by contrasting geopolitical leanings between Marcos Jr. and the Duterte family. Marcos Jr. has strengthened defense ties with the United States, a treaty ally, while taking a stance against China's assertive actions in the South China Sea. In contrast, former President Rodrigo Duterte fostered closer relationships with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, while also expressing threats to sever ties with Washington.

Vice President Duterte has faced criticism for not publicly condemning China's actions against Filipino forces and fishermen in disputed waters, which have included the use of high-pressure water cannons.
