Philadelphia Woman Intervenes in Assault Using Bike Helmet

A Philadelphia woman has been hailed a hero after she intervened in a daylight assault on a 63-year-old woman by striking the alleged attacker with her bike helmet. The incident occurred on September 21 near the 1800 block of Federal Street in the city's Point Breeze neighborhood around 4:15 p.m.

Mary Martin was riding home from work when she witnessed the alleged sexual assault. She initially shouted at the man to stop, but he continued. Seeing the distressed victim prompted Martin to take direct action. She confronted the man, brandishing her helmet and striking him with it.

A witness described seeing Martin chase after the fleeing suspect, shouting, "How dare you?"

Philadelphia police stated that the victim reported an unknown man had approached her from behind and inappropriately touched her. No injuries were reported.

Martin expressed shock at the suspect's brazen behavior. After realizing the potential danger of continued physical confrontation, she stopped hitting him, took photographs of the fleeing man, and then stayed with the victim. Martin accompanied the woman to the Philadelphia police's Special Victims Unit to file a report.

MARTIN SAID SHE USED HER VOICE AND HER BIKE HELMET TO INTERVENE AND STOP THE ASSAILANT, CHARGING AFTER HIM, BRANDISHING HER HELMET.

Martin attributed her decisive action partly to her understanding of the 'bystander effect,' a phenomenon where individuals are less likely to offer help to victims when others are present. She believes in the importance of speaking up against wrongdoing, stating, "If you see something, say something." She noted that the victim's protests did not deter the assailant until her own interruption.

RESIDENTS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD SAID THE ALLEGED ASSAULT MADE THEM NERVOUS, AND THEY'RE GOING TO BE MORE AWARE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS NOW.

The incident has left some residents of the Point Breeze neighborhood feeling uneasy and more vigilant about their surroundings.

Police have released photographs of the suspect and are appealing for the public's assistance in identifying him. The Special Victims Unit is continuing its investigation into the alleged assault.
