Philadelphia Shooting Suspect Faces 76 Charges, Held Without Bail
Eric Lewis, accused of ambushing officers, is charged with murder of a police officer and other offenses.
A Philadelphia man has been charged with 76 counts, including murder, in connection with a Saturday morning ambush that killed one police officer and wounded another. Eric Lewis, 35, was ordered held without bail during a Sunday morning arraignment, according to court records.
Lewis faces charges of murder, homicide of a law enforcement officer, attempted murder, 10 counts of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, and terroristic threats, among other offenses. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 26.
The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. Saturday when two officers responded to a report of a man with a gun in West Philadelphia. Upon locating an armed man on a porch, the officers came under heavy gunfire, according to police.
Officer Shane Seiber, 40, was killed in the ambush. He was an Air Force veteran who had served 10 years with the Philadelphia Police Department and was a father of two. His partner, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times and was initially in critical condition. He has since been updated to stable condition.
Lewis, an employee of the Philadelphia Water Department, has a criminal history dating back to 2012, including convictions for theft, receiving stolen property, gun-related offenses, simple assault, and disorderly conduct. He received probation in several of those cases.
Authorities found Lewis in possession of two handguns and a shotgun at the scene. One of the handguns reportedly belonged to the wounded officer.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stated at a press conference Saturday that Officer Seiber "fought valiantly, but he lost his life today."
