Philadelphia Officer Fatally Shot, Another Critically Wounded in Ambush
Authorities responded to a call about a gunman before officers were ambushed on a porch, with one officer succumbing to his injuries and another in critical condition.
One police officer has died and another is in critical condition following an ambush early Saturday morning in West Philadelphia. The officers were responding to a call about a man armed with a gun on a porch.
As officers arrived on the 100 block of North 52nd Street just after midnight, they were met with a hail of gunfire, according to WPVI.
The fallen officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was reportedly shot 12 times. The second officer, a 40-year-old father of two, sustained three gunshot wounds and was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition.
The suspect fled the scene, firing additional shots at officers in a nearby alley before climbing a tree. A SWAT unit arrived and the suspect later surrendered to police. Authorities recovered three firearms, including two handguns and a shotgun.
Neither the suspect nor the deceased officer has been identified. Both officers were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
