Philadelphia marked America's 250th birthday with a significant Fourth of July celebration at Lincoln Financial Field, preceding the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between France and Paraguay. The event featured a large-scale patriotic display, including pyrotechnics, a Navy flyover, and a performance by the Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale.
The field was designed to resemble the American flag, serving as the backdrop for the ceremony. The Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale performed a rendition of "America the Beautiful." During the performance, two young individuals, described as a White young man and a Black young lady, delivered spoken word poetry focusing on the nation's founding principles and their connection to Philadelphia. They referenced the idea that "250 years ago, in this city, an idea found its voice." The poetry emphasized the ongoing, imperfect yet bold belief in people, with themes of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness leading to freedom and the uniting power of the World Cup.
MISS PENNSYLVANIA Stephanie Skinner, dressed as Lady Liberty, also made an appearance as part of the festivities. The event aimed to celebrate the country's upcoming anniversary, drawing parallels between national pride and the global unity fostered by the World Cup.
