PGA Tour Champions golfer Matt Gogel has been suspended for six months for violating the Tour's integrity program by betting on PGA Tour events. The suspension is set to begin on Sunday and conclude on February 22, 2027.
Gogel, 55, released a statement asserting that he made "small recreational wagers on golf" in 2024 without realizing he was doing so. He clarified that these bets were not placed on tournaments in which he participated, nor on regular PGA Tour or PGA Tour Champions events.
"I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated," Gogel said in his statement. "I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake, and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions."
The PGA Tour confirmed that Gogel never bet on a tournament he played in, but his actions still constituted a violation of the Tour's rules, which prohibit wagering on PGA-sanctioned events.
This is not the first instance of a golfer facing suspension for betting on PGA Tour competitions. In 2023, Korn Ferry Tour players Vince India and Jake Staiano received six-month and three-month suspensions, respectively, for similar infractions.
Gogel's career includes one PGA Tour victory at the 2002 Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Following his initial PGA Tour career, he worked as a golf broadcaster for The Golf Channel and CBS Sports. He joined the PGA Tour Champions, the senior circuit, after turning 50.
Gogel is currently positioned 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points standings.
