PGA Tour Caddie Details Mid-Round Meltdown With Alejandro Tosti

Longtime PGA Tour caddie Cliff Ellis has revealed the reasons behind his abrupt departure from the Biltmore Championship earlier this month, detailing an argument with golfer Alejandro Tosti that escalated to the point of him abandoning his role mid-round. The incident, captured on video, showed Ellis dropping Tosti's bag on the fairway and walking off the course.

Speaking on Tee Box Golf Radio, Ellis described the week with the notoriously fiery Argentine Tosti as "ludicrous" and filled with "off the wall and insane things." The tension reportedly began on the driving range with an argument over bag placement. However, the situation came to a head during the first round as the pair approached the 18th green, which was Tosti's ninth hole of the day.

Ellis recounted Tosti questioning why an umbrella was in the bag. Ellis explained its utility for both rain and sun protection, noting Tosti's frequent use of it for shade. Tosti's dismissive response, calling it "stupid to have it out here," prompted Ellis to ask if Tosti intended to carry the bag himself. The exchange reportedly turned personal when Tosti allegedly made a "personal attack" on Ellis.

When Tosti refused to retract his comments, Ellis stated, "I am done with you, and I'm out of here. I quit." Tosti was left to finish the remainder of his round alone, carrying his own bag and carding a one-over-par 72.

This is not the first instance of Tosti's volatile interactions on the tour. In 2023, he was reported to have cursed at his caddie during a Korn Ferry Tour event. Earlier this year, at the Valspar Championship, Tosti gained attention for replacing his caddie's name on his bib with "NEED A WIFE" in what appeared to be a public search for a partner.
