Peter Thiel Questions Trump's Iran War Strategy Amid Midterm Election Concerns

Billionaire Republican investor Peter Thiel has voiced skepticism regarding Donald Trump's war with Iran, questioning the strategic decisions made in the conflict and suggesting it may have been a mistake. Thiel's comments emerged just weeks before the midterm elections, a critical period for Republicans seeking to maintain control of Congress.

In a recording of a lecture obtained by Politico, Thiel stated, "I'm sceptical of [the war]; I think we should not have done it. There were a lot of mistakes that were made." He added, "Maybe we don't have the hard power. Maybe we're going to lose the soft power war." The remarks were made during an event hosted by Thiel in Nashville.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East began on February 28 with joint U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. The war has led to soaring fuel prices and complicated shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Thiel's statements come as President Trump faces significant pressure to support Republican candidates. The party is striving to retain its narrow Senate majorities in the upcoming November 3 elections. Historically, the party in power tends to lose seats during midterm elections, and Republicans face an especially difficult challenge this cycle due to Trump's role in unseating several long-serving incumbents and his declining approval ratings, which are impacted by voter frustration over high costs and the unpopular Iran war.

Despite his criticism of the Iran conflict, Thiel reiterated his continued support for President Trump. Thiel, a prominent Silicon Valley supporter of Trump, donated $1.25 million to Trump's 2016 campaign. His data-mining company, Palantir, has provided assistance to the Trump administration's efforts related to migrant deportation. Thiel also served as a key advisor and donor during Trump's first term and maintains some ties to the White House. He is also known to be closely associated with Vice President JD Vance, having invested significantly in Vance's Senate primary campaign.
