Peter Overton's Father, John Herbert Overton AM, Dies at 88

John Herbert Overton AM, father of Channel Nine personality Peter Overton, died peacefully at the age of 88, surrounded by his family. His obituary noted his "compassion and skill touched and saved so many lives."

Overton, an associate professor of anesthesia at the University of Sydney, worked for decades at the Westmead Children's Hospital. He was described as instrumental in educating and training the first paramedics in New South Wales and a driving force behind the establishment of intensive care paramedics in the state. He was recognized for his significant service to medicine through clinical, administrative, and advisory roles, and his contributions to professional organizations.

In 2014, Overton received the Member of the Order of Australia. At the time, Peter Overton spoke of his father's dedication, stating, "Dad worked at Westmead Children's Hospital for decades and he was the most beautiful doctor, revered by all." He added that the thousands of sick children and their parents treated by his father over the years would be as proud as the family was.

John Overton himself expressed gratitude for the support of his family and colleagues, reflecting on the importance of giving back to society. He referenced President John F. Kennedy's call to action, emphasizing that true reward comes not from money, but from the positive impact one leaves behind. He found personal joy in his work with the Children's Hospital and the army, viewing it as an opportunity to contribute to the community.
