Peter Murrell's Legal Aid Withdrawn Following Embezzlement Conviction

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has had his legal aid withdrawn following his conviction for embezzling more than £400,000 from the party. Murrell, who was sentenced to five years in prison in June, had been receiving government-funded legal assistance since last year.

The Scottish Legal Aid Board confirmed that Murrell is "no longer in receipt of legal aid." The board's website outlines several reasons for the withdrawal of legal aid, including a client providing false information, failing to disclose relevant information, or falling behind on contributions. The specific reason for Murrell's support being cut has not been disclosed.

During his sentencing, the court was informed that Murrell possessed over £600,000 in pension accounts, indicating he would be able to repay the embezzled sum of £400,310.65. The Herald reported last month that approximately £4,831 had been spent on Murrell's legal aid up to that point, with expectations of further payments as legal representatives submit their bills.

The funds embezzled by Murrell were used for various purchases, including a luxury motorhome costing £124,500 in 2020, as well as jewelry, cosmetics, stationery, and games consoles. The motorhome was later seized from his mother's driveway with minimal mileage.

Police Scotland's investigation into the SNP's finances began in 2021 after inquiries into the whereabouts of £667,000 raised for a second independence referendum campaign. This broader investigation ultimately uncovered Murrell's embezzlement activities.
