Voice actor Peter Cullen, renowned for bringing Optimus Prime to life in the Transformers franchise, died at the age of 85 due to cardiac arrest, according to his death certificate. The cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest linked to respiratory arrest, with a malignant neoplasm of the lower lobe of the lungs identified as an underlying cause. Cullen passed away on August 26 at his home in Toluca Lake, California.

Cullen's voice became synonymous with the heroic Autobot leader, a role he originated in the classic 1980s animated series and reprised for a string of successful live-action films. His iconic portrayal of Optimus Prime began in 1984 after he won an audition for the role.

Beyond the Transformers, Cullen also lent his voice to the beloved character Eeyore in "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," which aired from 1988 to 1991, and continued the role in subsequent Pooh projects. He described voicing the melancholic donkey as a "relief" after his more action-oriented roles.

Born Peter Claver Cullen in Montreal in 1941, he initially pursued a career in serious acting before finding his niche in voice work. He recalled his brother, Larry, a Marine Corps captain, advising him to "be strong enough to be gentle" and to "have a little dignity" when auditioning for Optimus Prime, advice that shaped his iconic performance.

Cullen's career also included early work on shows like "Scooby-Doo & Scrappy-Doo" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks." The 1986 animated film "The Transformers: The Movie" was also a significant feature in his career.

The live-action "Transformers" films, beginning with the 2007 release directed by Michael Bay, achieved massive global success. The first five films, all directed by Bay, included "Dark of the Moon" (2011) and "Age of Extinction" (2014), each grossing over $1 billion. Cullen continued to voice Optimus Prime in the franchise, most recently in "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" (2023).

Cullen's family confirmed his peaceful passing, stating he was "surrounded by his loving family - and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide." They requested that his legacy be honored by serving communities with compassion, integrity, and loyalty.
