Pete Davidson Says He Was 'Cooking' Ketamine During Addiction
The comedian details his struggles with substance abuse and his decision to seek help.
Pete Davidson has revealed that he was actively "cooking" ketamine at the height of his addiction, detailing a period where he consumed multiple substances daily before entering rehabilitation. In an interview with Variety, the 32-year-old comedian described a concerning phase where he was preparing liquid ketamine for personal use.
"It was K. I was getting liquid and cooking it. And I would do acid and shrooms and whippets and smoke weed all day and eat pills every day," Davidson stated. He explained that the situation became alarming when he no longer felt the desired effects of being high, noting, "It got scary because I didn’t feel high. I felt high when I wasn’t doing it, so I was like, this is a huge problem."
Davidson pinpointed the summer of 2023 as a low point, coinciding with the release of "Bupkis," an autobiographical series where he portrayed himself. Having left "Saturday Night Live" a year prior, he struggled with a lack of structure in his life. He found that embodying his own experiences in the show led him to confront difficult memories, which he then used drugs to cope with.
The turning point came after an emotional FaceTime call with his mother, Amy, who expressed her fear of seeing negative news about him. "She told me her biggest fear was waking up one day to see on the news that something bad had happened to me," Davidson recalled. "I reached a point where I couldn't do that to her anymore."
Following this conversation, Davidson entered rehab, even though "Bupkis" had been renewed for a second season. He acknowledged his role in perpetuating the intense public scrutiny surrounding his personal life. Despite previous stints in rehab, he emphasized that this time his desire to get clean was for himself.
"When I turned 30 and I was there, it was a real low point. Nothing much was going on with my career and I was like, 'This f****n' sucks. I can't do it anymore.' And it can't be for anyone or for a job. You really have to want it, and when you’re done, you're done," he said.
Davidson reported that he is now sober, consuming only about four beers annually. "I don't f**k with drugs anymore. It's been two or three years from doing really hard stuff and about a year or more from weed. Weirdly, the hardest thing to stop was weed," he admitted.
Having a daughter has made his decision to remain sober more straightforward. "Anytime there's ever a thought, I look at my phone background and go, 'Oh yeah, no,'" he said. He welcomed his daughter, Scottie, with model Elsie Hewitt late last year; the couple separated earlier this year.
Elsewhere in the interview, Davidson discussed his past relationship with Kim Kardashian, describing himself as a "survivor" of their intense nine-month romance. He noted that while Kardashian was respectful, the constant media attention and security demands associated with her lifestyle became overwhelming for him, particularly given his mental health and past struggles with addiction. "Look, man, that's a really tough atmosphere if you're not game. One of the things I love about Kim and that whole family is they’re like, 'This is what we do.'" Despite the intensity, Davidson stated he has no regrets about the relationship, adding, "We’re cool, and I have a lot of love for her, and I knew what I was getting into."
