Peruvian Politician Named Hitler Mussolini Elected Mayor
A left-wing candidate with a name echoing fascist dictators has won a mayoral election in a small Peruvian town.
A left-wing politician named Hitler Mussolini has been elected mayor of Queropalca, a small town in Peru, just one year after resigning from a right-wing populist party. Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores, 45, secured 34% of the vote in Sunday's election, running under the banner of the center-left Ahora Nacion (Now Nation) party.
Flores previously belonged to the right-wing Popular Force party, a movement led by Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former dictator Alberto Fujimori. He resigned from the party in 2025, according to his candidate declaration form. It remains unclear when he joined Ahora Nacion.
The newly elected mayor garnered 229 votes, outpacing his closest rival, Gaspar Benilde Osario Zambrano of the right-wing Popular Renewal party, by 25 votes. The election in Queropalca, a town with 730 residents, saw a close contest, with only 42 votes separating the top three candidates.
Flores, who was formerly the manager of Simeon Sac Investment Group, claims to have a high school diploma, though his university education is not specified.
This is not the first instance of a politician with the name "Hitler" winning an election. In 2011, Hitler Alba served as the mayor of Yungar. When Alba ran for re-election in 2018, one of his opponents was Lennin Vladimir Rodriguez Valverde, leading to online commentary dubbing the contest "Hitler v Lenin."
Alba ran on a slogan of being a "good" Hitler and stated in an interview with the Peruvian news agency Efe, "Maybe it's a coincidence that my name is Hitler. I really don’t have any objection to Hitler. It’s like any other name. For me, it’s as if my name was Juan, Lucas, or Sebastian." Voters appeared unconcerned with his name, as Alba won that election with 47.7% of the vote.
In a similar case last November, a Namibian politician, Adolf Hitler Uunona, was re-elected to his local seat for the fifth consecutive time. He has since adopted the name Adolf Uunona, stating, "My name is not Adolf Hitler. I am Adolf Uunona. I have seen in the past people calling me Adolf Hitler and trying to associate me with someone I do not even know."
