Perth Man Faces Life Imprisonment on Upgraded Terror Charges

A 22-year-old man from Perth, Australia, is facing a potential life sentence after authorities upgraded terror-related charges against him. The man has been involved in legal proceedings since December of the previous year.

Police on Friday elevated the charges to include acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts. Authorities allege the man sought assistance through a messaging platform for information related to explosive devices, military and tactical training, weapons manufacturing, combat techniques, and fake documents as part of his alleged planning for a terrorist attack.

An electronic device seized during an investigation reportedly contained violent extremist material. Forensic examination also uncovered text messages and phone calls between the man and a woman known to him. He had previously been charged with assaulting and threatening to kill this woman and was released on bail.

His legal troubles began on December 4, when he was charged with possessing or controlling violent extremist material obtained or accessed via a carriage service, along with four charges for breaching bail conditions. Later that month, he faced additional charges for collecting or making a document connected to a terrorist act, possessing an item connected to a terrorist act, and possessing or controlling violent extremist material in data form.

Following the imposition of the new charge related to planning a terror attack, prosecutors agreed to withdraw the earlier charges concerning the collection of a document and possession of an item connected to a terrorist act.

The man was scheduled to appear before the Supreme Court of Western Australia on Friday. The investigation and charges stem from a collaborative effort involving the Western Australia Police Force, the Australian Federal Police, and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
