A junior doctor in Perth, Australia, Christian Jack Joseph, 26, has been charged with manslaughter following a fatal incident early Saturday morning. The charges stem from an alleged confrontation where Joseph is accused of placing a man in a chokehold.

According to reports, Joseph and a friend were returning home from a night out when they encountered a man allegedly peering into the friend's South Terrace residence. The pair reportedly pursued the man, with Joseph then pinning him to the ground and applying a chokehold. The 63-year-old man lost consciousness, and Joseph initiated CPR while his friend called emergency services. The man was transported to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he later died.

Joseph, a junior doctor at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, was arrested and charged. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance on August 5 at Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court. The court denied a request to suppress his name, with the magistrate stating there were insufficient grounds for suppression.

News of the allegations has reportedly sent shockwaves through Joseph's circle of friends. Friends described him as a "genuine guy" who was talented, committed to his studies, and maintained a good social life. They emphasized his good nature, sense of humor, and dedication to following in his father's footsteps by becoming a doctor. One friend noted Joseph was considered the smartest in their school year.

Court documents revealed that Joseph's lawyer argued the alleged attack was out of character and that Joseph had acted in self-defense, feeling intimidated by the older man's behavior. The defense also raised questions about why the man lost consciousness so quickly. Prosecutors acknowledged that the victim's actions at the window were unclear.

Joseph's social media presence indicates interests in music, travel, and his medical career. He is also reportedly a practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a martial art that involves joint locks and chokeholds, and has previously won gold medals in the sport. He appeared in Perth Magistrates Court wearing a blue forensics jumpsuit, with family and supporters present.

Investigators are reportedly reviewing CCTV footage of the incident. The magistrate deemed the charge too serious to grant bail, citing the nature of the allegations.
