Commentator Rob Shuter has highlighted what he describes as a "selective" display of kindness and sympathy from Hollywood, particularly in the case of former gossip blogger Perez Hilton. Shuter argues that while the entertainment industry readily mourns the deaths of celebrities, it remains largely silent regarding Hilton's current personal struggles.
Shuter noted the significant public outpouring of support following the death of actress Hayden Panettiere at age 36, citing tributes from figures like Viola Davis and Derek Hough. Similar sentiments were expressed for other deceased figures such as James Van Der Beek, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Eric Dane. However, Shuter contrasts this with the "silence" that has met Hilton's "dark struggles."
Hilton, 48, has been hospitalized since August 4 following a distressed TikTok livestream that Shuter described as "horrific." The commentator acknowledged Hilton's past behavior, admitting to witnessing "abominable" actions during his time in celebrity public relations. Shuter recalled Hilton's controversial post after Heath Ledger's 2008 death, which depicted Ledger's image with the caption, "Why couldn't it be Britney?" He also mentioned Hilton's relentless criticism of Ashlee Simpson after a 2004 Saturday Night Live performance.
Despite acknowledging Hilton's past transgressions, Shuter questioned Hollywood's apparent lack of compassion now that Hilton is reportedly "recovering from a horrific mental health incident" and is described as a "broken person with three children and devastated family."
Actor Jared Padalecki initially posted a message of support for Hilton, urging him to "be kind to yourself right now" and to "surround yourself with the love and support that all humans deserve." However, Padalecki later deleted the post, stating he had learned new information and was "sorry."
Shuter suggested that this selective sympathy is hypocritical, especially given that Hilton played a role in amplifying the careers of many current stars. He specifically mentioned Hilton's early support for Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, and questioned the lack of compassion from stars like Taylor Swift and Rihanna, whose careers also benefited from Hilton's attention.
A casting director friend of Hilton's was quoted as asking, "If someone helped amplify your career and was once part of your world, shouldn't compassion survive the fact that you later fell out?"
Shuter concluded by observing that death often prompts generosity in Hollywood, as the deceased cannot offend or disappoint. He argued that Perez Hilton, who is still alive, is currently in greater need of sympathy. A director, who had met both Panettiere and Hilton, was quoted saying, "You can mourn Hayden without pretending her life was perfect. You can acknowledge Perez's terrible behavior without pretending he deserves to be ignored."
